Facsimile from NYTimes: The Spanish graphic designer Joan Pons Moll is creating a new typeface, but unlike most typographers, he’s doing so with his feet rather than a computer, and he’s slightly out of breath. Taking sneakers to pavement, Pons is planning to run the entire alphabet — both upper- and lower-case letters — in his inventive endeavor, “Running Alphabet.”

Friday 20th of May – the workshop venue, normally a place where they do plastic surgery (!!) but this day was all about type. (check out the “E” in the building fasade)

I’m tired (from last nights Karlovackos) but ready for som typeface to face with the Croatians.

HOWtoWOW goes HelloTypo™.

We handed out letter cards to the workshop participants. The plan was to get the crowd to make the letter from ready mates they found round and about. But first we had to fill their heads and hearts with typographical joy and inspiration.

But after a couple of hours talking about typography, it was time to make some.

The task: “Go out. Find ready mates. Build a letter. Take a photo” The crowd went out for fifteen minutes and came back with all sorts of sweet stuff. Flowers, dried up dog shit, bananas, car tires, medication, sugar, toys, rocks and loads more.

Now we’re going to make a bitmap font of the ready made letters, free for download. It will be up in a couple of weeks.

We finished up the workshop with showing some type treatment done by the HelloTypo™ club members. The image over is of the font See Ark Sheep by Stian and his compadre.

I started the day out tired, and ended the day tired. But I was a happy camper. Oh’ the joy! We enjoyed to do the workshop, it was great fun.

We (Aasmund and Ståle) where invited to do a workshop at How to Wow in Zagreb the 20th of may (tomorrow). So today at 0530 AM we started our trip from Trondheim to Zagreb.

A 10 minute break can turn into something… different.

This sculpture is part of an international exhibition that deals with the world of script, design and art. The works of the exhibition describe how text, visual art and design are attached to each other. I saw this one at Kiasma, Helsinki a while ago. It is made by Pekka Syrjälä and the word ei means no in english.

Travelling Letters is a series of exhibitions that change place, size and contents. The first exhibition was organized in St. Petersburg, 2008. Altogether 41 artists, calligraphers, designers and graphic designers from 11 countries are participating in Travelling Letters 2010. Unfortunately I could not find any information on the next exibition.

Yes, it’s old news, but I can’t help to post some work of Wayne White. He transforms cheap mass produced oil paintings into surroundings for great 3D typography. His work has been compared to Ed Ruscha whom soon deserves a post here as well. Enjoy!

Sometimes I wonder if other people are as passionate about typography as we at HelloTypo™ are. The answer is always: YES. Just a little trip around on the Google roller coster, and you can find all kind of screwed up type nerds with all sorts of weird ideas. I like it.

This is a huge typewriter, and if anyone gets me one of these for my Bday, I´ll be a happy camper forever and ever ever for ever ever forever ever etc. And a half naked woman (preferably Sonya Henie) should always type my letters for me. I should smoke Marlboro Light and wear a hat. A big hat. I would send letters to every prime minister, in every country, asking for more ink and paper for my huge typewriter.

On second thoughts, I´m happy with just the typewriter, and actually, I don´t smoke, or like ice skating. A typewriter and a hat and I´m in!

After yesterdays talk, I found my self bold enough to post an old type sketch of mine. This was made for a project we had couple of years ago. Think it was early 2007. The sketch was suppose to be, if it worked out (witch it did not), the heading for the famous UREDD calendar. Anyhow, here is my sketch:

Me and fellow type club member, Aasmund, played with pencils and paper yesterday. I took (crappy iPhone-) pictures of it, and loudly said that I would post them here. So here goes.

I know the pics sucks, and it´s not the greatest font design in the world, but f**k it, it was fun.

Autobahn is an dutch design agency with a love for type. Autobahn designs special graphical projects, often with an illustrative and typographical angle. I really like the way they play with type in this particular project (glad I´m not themodel). The project I´m talking about is called Arts In Area Development.

“Arts In Area Development is a collaboration between artists and area developers. Together they are looking for a way to provide a place for art in areas yet to be developed. Will the implantation of art and culture into area development projects increase the quality of the development plans? What possibilities will there be for the artists? And will there arise involvement with the future area residents?”

My friend and artist Bjørn Kowalski Hansen (one of the co-founders of the legendary t-shirt brand and art project Håkki™ (check out the super cheesy and fun intro on this site) ) has some sweet art projects going on. Luke Lucas have made a typographic title treatment  for an article in the latest edition of Lifelounge Magazine – The Dirty Edition on swingers in America’s bible belt.

Slippery and hot. Lifelounge Magazine has not only cool typo inside their mag, oh no, their covers are also sweet bites for your eyes. I recommend that you check check check them out and bookmark the site or subscribe to the magazine.. Here is some samples:

Evbjorn tweeted about this amazing project; The Apphabet. A font composed out of existing iPhone App icons. Freaking lovely! The concept is by Ine Reijnen, and the design is by the different app-makers. You can even download it and have some geeky fun. I did.
