New York Types opening night

Doors opened on Dec. 15th for the ʻNew York Typesʼ exhibit at the Art Directors Club in New York City, presented by New York Writes Itself and The Village Voice. Inspired by the ʻScriptʼ at http://www.newyorkwritesitself.com, the exhibition brrought to life real words heard on the streets of New York City.

This event was inspired by New Yorkers, and brought to life by New Yorkers. Every piece of art in the show was inspired by a person, scene, or quote witnessed in NYC. Thank you to the scribes for contributing stories. Thank you to the people of New York who unknowingly catalyzed an amazing letterpress show.

Over 650 people (including those who acted as scribes and submitted the words they heard to the website) descended on the Art Directors Club for opening night where great art, live music and booze was enjoyed by all.

Get involved as a Scribe at http://www.newyorkwritesitself.com, and your everyday experiences of New York just might become part of the next New York Writes Itself experience, which could take the form of music, writing, photography, a short film or more.

This is a custom made alphabet made for an album cover. The tools used in this project are soil, home-made light table, paint brush, camera and photoshop.

After the photoshoot, the individual letters was put together in photoshop and adjusted on top of the font that was used as a template. Yes, I had a print out of the alphabet beside me when i formed the soil. I decided it was a safe thing to do for maximum readability on the finished alphabet.

Oh Yeah Studio is a Oslo based design duo. They do amazing work. And according to Computer Arts they are the next big thing. Oh Yeah Studio doesn’t only make killer illustrations and lovely posters, they also treat type in a sweet way.

Friday 20th of May – the workshop venue, normally a place where they do plastic surgery (!!) but this day was all about type. (check out the “E” in the building fasade)

I’m tired (from last nights Karlovackos) but ready for som typeface to face with the Croatians.

HOWtoWOW goes HelloTypo™.

We handed out letter cards to the workshop participants. The plan was to get the crowd to make the letter from ready mates they found round and about. But first we had to fill their heads and hearts with typographical joy and inspiration.

But after a couple of hours talking about typography, it was time to make some.

The task: “Go out. Find ready mates. Build a letter. Take a photo” The crowd went out for fifteen minutes and came back with all sorts of sweet stuff. Flowers, dried up dog shit, bananas, car tires, medication, sugar, toys, rocks and loads more.

Now we’re going to make a bitmap font of the ready made letters, free for download. It will be up in a couple of weeks.

We finished up the workshop with showing some type treatment done by the HelloTypo™ club members. The image over is of the font See Ark Sheep by Stian and his compadre.

I started the day out tired, and ended the day tired. But I was a happy camper. Oh’ the joy! We enjoyed to do the workshop, it was great fun.

We (Aasmund and Ståle) where invited to do a workshop at How to Wow in Zagreb the 20th of may (tomorrow). So today at 0530 AM we started our trip from Trondheim to Zagreb.

A 10 minute break can turn into something… different.

I stumbled upon this nice (nasty) picture while researching for the upcoming workshop we´re doing in Zagreb next week. I do not remember the source, probably Flickr-something.

Anna Garforth experiments with type. Wild at heart was, as she states, created in rural Catalunya, northern Spain. A 2m x 9m installation was rendered in masking tape, using a wire fence as a grid. My brother made me aware of this playful Flickr page of Fabian Gonzalez. The Font Wader cought my eye. The Font is strong with this one. (He also have a pile of fun illustrations. Click to be clever.)

Two of the Cmykkel girls did a design job for the Academy of Fine Arts in Trondheim. Here is the process of brush and color palette to the finished design.

This water color palette has not been used since the sixth grade (about 15 years ago) but it still works.

As you can see the letters is based on the typeface Umbra from 1935. Beautiful shadows of letters in water paint.

Now these letters were scanned and played whith inside the magical world of Photoshop.

The letters were even vectorized and tried out with different patterns.

But that was a dead end for this project. And now to the final design that won the rounds of the creative selection process…

Google images was nice enough to introduce me to these beautiful handmade posters from Belgium. They are posters for an exhibition made by the participating artists themselves. I’m guessing it’s some kind of adhesive paper / tape in glorious neon red and green they’ve used. Gotta love it.

Found these refreshing books on Boooooooooom and Today and Tomorrow and Flickr. The artist is Isaac Salazar. Fan-freaking-tastic! Click the links if you like, there are more of this folded sweetness.

I was looking through my archives today and stumbled upon this typographical piece I did in 2009. And since I found it, why not share it with you guys.

My friend Cecilie Ellefsen is one of my favourite illustrators out there (and her boyfriend is a killer on 3D). She works with the skilled crew at Commando Group, and has her personal site Happy Meat. On her own site, she reasontly added a sketchbook section. I´m loving it. Her Moleskine is filled to thr rim with sweet and lovely illutrations. And of course type treatment. Be a quick brown fox and jump over to her sketchbook and have good, long look. While your at it, check out the Commando Sketchbook as well. Peace.

Found these lovely bikes on Behance. I know it´s winter outside, and bikes perhaps is not the first thing you think about now days, but they where sweet. So I wanted to share them with you.

While walking around in Berlin i stumbled upon this incredible wall art in the shop of Esther Perbandt (a bag designer). The street-artist-turned-straight-artist Jaybo Munk is the creator behind the display which is made all by scrap wood and measures 3m x 3m. It was made especially for the autumn/winter collection, so if you want to have a look at it you’d better hurry! And you should, because these pictures don’t do justice to the art work at all. The shop is in Mitte (Almstadtstrasße 3).

I´m an Art Director at Tibe T advertising agency. I got that job recently, and my first job here was to make a logo for the musical Rock ´n Roll Wolf for Trøndelag Teater. The musical is based on the movie Mama. The lead characters is a goat and of course the wolf. And everything goes down in the forrest. My friend and work mate Aasmund suggested that I should go for a walk in a forrest. So to make the logo, I went to the forrest and found some tree bark. So the typography was made with bark. Here is the prosess:

Every letter gets a dash of Photoshop, and then put together:

And then the tweeking starts:

The letters got fatter, some colors and to be honest, a got a bit to much… So I did the vector boogie on the logo.. And I´m glad I did. POW the logo is all done:

Meny, a norwegian supermarket chain, surprised me today while I read the news paper. In the news paper Meny had a standard advertisement paper (product + price). But on the front page of their paper they had some fantastic carved type. The rest of the layout wea crap, but that type was a piece of heaven. (I don´t know who did it. Do you?) Enjoy:

Stumbled upon this amazing guy, from Sweden, named Thomas Broomé. I´ve never heard of him before, but damn he produces loads of lovely things. Not only typographical stuff, but sculptures and other sweet bites. His take on typography is right up my alley. Analog shit. No computers. Bookmarked for ever!

I saw a small part of a documentary about Ed Ruscha yesterday. The American artist is a living legend. Four decades with painting. Read his bio here. He implements typography in much of his work. Fine art with typography. -Inspiring.

One of the Cmykkel girls and her boyfriend, art dude and musician Tore Reisch, made an alphabet of pine a while back. Tore made a piece of art with it. Nice. I´ve been a Reisch fan since I first saw a painting by him, on a wall in Stallmesterveien in Trondheim back in ’99. Cool to se local people play with type!

We have written about Jessica Hische and her super cool project; Daily Drop Cap some time ago here on HelloTypo™. Now she have made some sweet letterpress prints of selected letters. You can, and must, buy them over at her shop. BTW if you have been a HelloTypo™ follower a while, you´ve probably also seen these Hische designs before. Yes we love Jessica. I stumbled over this sweet final project from newly graduated design student Patrycja Zywert. She says it best herself: This project is a typographic installation and a poster advertising the film about Norman Foster, titled‘How much does your building weigh, Mr. Foster?’. The idea is to express the aspects of Foster’s striking architecture by creating large geometric letters F, O, S, T, E and R. The installation also aims to become his architectural signature.

helloVARSKO! is history. The event was so smooth. People enjoyed the day from A to Z. VARSKO!, Kreativt Forum Trondheim and Grafill Trøndelag, helped us to unfold an amazing happening. Two great and inspiring talks from one of our favorite sweeds Robert Lindström from North Kingdom and Spanish designers Alex Trochut & Marta Cerdà.

Alex on how he made the font Neo Deco. Marta and Alex actually did they first ever talk together as a team at helloVARSKO! We recommend their talk to anyone, everywhere. People came up to us and said they was so inspired they had to run home to draw asap.

Both the swede and the spanish couple got a small present from us. A book by Norwegian photographer Rune Johansen, and a pair of jeans from local jeans brand Johnny Love.

Amazing Margaret Berger played with a full band. Super sweet. People danced till they spilled their beer on each other. Lovely.

Siggi Eggertsson is speaking at Visuelt dagene in Oslo tomorrow. If you are in the area, be there or be *drawing a square in the air*  (like Uma in Pulp Fiction did). He also updatet his site a few weeks ago. Loads of typography and other beautifulness. Check check check it out. Below you can see a rejected magazine cover he made. (why they rejected this I don´t know. Stupid.)

One of my favorite Norwegian designers Robin Snasen Rengård has made loads of sweet stuff. And this Rumble in Rhodos cd is filled to the rim with sweetness. Playful but tight. Love it. I urge you to check out his site. ASAP.

Got a tip from Marte to check out Rachel Thomas. Nice experimental type made with found objects or as the cupcake pillows whom I think she has made herself, I hope!

Found this sweet site via ILT. Typenuts is a site with a bunch of free iPhone and Desktop wallpapers for you to download. And if you are a designer with the love of type, you can send your design to the makers, and perhaps your design will be among the sweetness.

Sometimes I wonder if other people are as passionate about typography as we at HelloTypo™ are. The answer is always: YES. Just a little trip around on the Google roller coster, and you can find all kind of screwed up type nerds with all sorts of weird ideas. I like it.

A clever gentleman from Milan named Matteo Gualandris have made a magazine called “Science Fiction Typography”. It contains an analytical story of typographic used in America’s most popular science fiction magazines published between 1930 and 1970. The main focus is on cover headlines. To make the magazine look old and used Matteo had it stuffed down in his back pocket for days.
