This is a custom made alphabet made for an album cover. The tools used in this project are soil, home-made light table, paint brush, camera and photoshop.

After the photoshoot, the individual letters was put together in photoshop and adjusted on top of the font that was used as a template. Yes, I had a print out of the alphabet beside me when i formed the soil. I decided it was a safe thing to do for maximum readability on the finished alphabet.

A super sweet font family designed by Aurèle Sack was just released by Lineto. The family includes 18 cuts and 4 weights and is named LL BROWN. I love this typeface. I need this typeface. I´ll buy this typeface.  Now!

Friday 20th of May – the workshop venue, normally a place where they do plastic surgery (!!) but this day was all about type. (check out the “E” in the building fasade)

I’m tired (from last nights Karlovackos) but ready for som typeface to face with the Croatians.

HOWtoWOW goes HelloTypo™.

We handed out letter cards to the workshop participants. The plan was to get the crowd to make the letter from ready mates they found round and about. But first we had to fill their heads and hearts with typographical joy and inspiration.

But after a couple of hours talking about typography, it was time to make some.

The task: “Go out. Find ready mates. Build a letter. Take a photo” The crowd went out for fifteen minutes and came back with all sorts of sweet stuff. Flowers, dried up dog shit, bananas, car tires, medication, sugar, toys, rocks and loads more.

Now we’re going to make a bitmap font of the ready made letters, free for download. It will be up in a couple of weeks.

We finished up the workshop with showing some type treatment done by the HelloTypo™ club members. The image over is of the font See Ark Sheep by Stian and his compadre.

I started the day out tired, and ended the day tired. But I was a happy camper. Oh’ the joy! We enjoyed to do the workshop, it was great fun.

We (Aasmund and Ståle) where invited to do a workshop at How to Wow in Zagreb the 20th of may (tomorrow). So today at 0530 AM we started our trip from Trondheim to Zagreb.

I´m an Art Director at Tibe T advertising agency. I got that job recently, and my first job here was to make a logo for the musical Rock ´n Roll Wolf for Trøndelag Teater. The musical is based on the movie Mama. The lead characters is a goat and of course the wolf. And everything goes down in the forrest. My friend and work mate Aasmund suggested that I should go for a walk in a forrest. So to make the logo, I went to the forrest and found some tree bark. So the typography was made with bark. Here is the prosess:

Every letter gets a dash of Photoshop, and then put together:

And then the tweeking starts:

The letters got fatter, some colors and to be honest, a got a bit to much… So I did the vector boogie on the logo.. And I´m glad I did. POW the logo is all done:

Its a long time since I took the train. When I travel by train, I try to draw type with a steady hand. Two type ideas merge in to one. Hmmm … Its probably more a mind map than fine art.

I stumbled over this sweet final project from newly graduated design student Patrycja Zywert. She says it best herself: This project is a typographic installation and a poster advertising the film about Norman Foster, titled‘How much does your building weigh, Mr. Foster?’. The idea is to express the aspects of Foster’s striking architecture by creating large geometric letters F, O, S, T, E and R. The installation also aims to become his architectural signature.

Build is a beautiful modular typeface Scottish designer and illustrator Steven Bonner made. It is for sale at YouWorkForThem. Perhaps it´s the way the shapes are mixed with this lovely colors, but I´m loving it. And I hope you do to.

Oslo based Ole Fredrik Ekern is a design student at Westerdals School of Communication . He have made a super sweet font (Gami) by folding paper. It works both in 3D and as vector. Nicely done.

Evbjorn tweeted about this amazing project; The Apphabet. A font composed out of existing iPhone App icons. Freaking lovely! The concept is by Ine Reijnen, and the design is by the different app-makers. You can even download it and have some geeky fun. I did.

New release from Hoefler & Frere-Jones. Vitesse is as H&FJ say a slab serif for the 21st century. Read the story behind Vitesse, see the different styles, and take it for a test drive here.

Our friend (and fellow type club member) Stian W. Bugten and his buddy Simon P. Egli has worked on a font the for a while now. We blogged about the project some time ago, but things have happened since then.

I got a sweet mail the other day. From Jonathan Calugi of Happy Lovers Town. With a free typeface download. Melkeveien made a really bautiful typeface for SDG and their client Statoil. Yes, it´s for the same profile as the much talked about redesigned logo… (Statoil and SDG is presenting the new profile at faglig frokost 9. desember at DogA (Oslo) ) I like the typeface. Good work Melkeveien!

Got a newsletter from YouWorkForThem yesterday, with loads of new font releases. Many nice fonts indeed. But one caught my eye: the font Blobz, Designed by Jeff Proctor. Why? I don´t know. Perhaps the colors. But I am a sucker for hand made organic and twirling fonts. Guess thats the old graffiti artist in me. I don´t think this one was the coolest/best font in the newsletter, but it was the one I thought was worth mentioning.

Here another pic, but without color… I like color. I like black&white also. I like type. (nice poem?)

Got friday news from Luth&Co with the new Unit Slab, a modern humasnistic slab made by Kris Sowersby, Christian Schwartz and Erik Spiekerman.

Quoted http://klim.co.nz: “Erik Spiekermann considers FF Unit (designed with Christian Schwartz) to be FF Meta’s “grown-up sister”. Comparing the two san-serifs one finds that Meta is warmer, more organic and slightly quirkier, whereas Unit is Teutonic, technical and serious. Despite these differences, they both clearly come from a similar place, sharing the same DNA.

During the development of Meta Serif, we identified the organic quirks of the original Meta and translated the relevant parts to serif forms by redrawing everything from scratch. Unit Slab was a much different design process. Unit possessed a solid skeleton that easily accepted slabs, making the first drafts fairly straight-forward to complete. However, it quickly became apparent that we couldn’t simply graft slabs onto Unit—the sheer size of the family (7 weights with italics, smallcaps and exhaustive numeral sets) and the subtlety of the slab-serif form demanded an unerring eye for detail combined with stamina for the marathon design process. Fortunately, the resulting slab-serif is the perfect typographic companion in style, tone and aesthetic to the original Unit.”

Stumbled upon this sweet thing on Behance. Eibatova Karina ( Eika ) have used pencil and drawn out the alphabet. her project idea was: To represent a letter in a natural form and appearance.  Nice! Aasmund bloged about the IQfont the other day. I liked the idea of a typeface being made by a car, so i googled a bit and BAM! I found a free download of the font. So, there you go… download and have fun.

I saw an amazing concept on FormFiftyFive yesterday, and I just had to tell our readers about it. Jas Bhachu is a student (!!!) at Liverpool School of Art & Design. Not only is his portfolio amazing and clever, but he have mada a Rubik’s Cube Font Generator. It works as an regular Rubik´s Cube, but it generates type, and works as a stamp. Again I say: DAMN!

TYPO Berlin is a design and media conference in, yes, Berlin. They started out in 1995 and has become one of Europe´s most important typography conferences. So if you happen to be in Berlin, be smart and kern your way in to heaven.

The people at FontFabric  have released a free font, and named it Facet™.

Here´s what FontFabric says about Facet™: “Facet is applicable for any type of graphic design – web, print, motion graphics etc and perfect for t-shirts and other items like logos, pictograms.”

The designers from Happy Lovers Town came to Trondheim and went crazy with visuals and music. They had freebees and balloons and I enjoyed it. But then again, I don´t need more then some balloons to be happy. They also made a typo set live (with wierd lovely cartoonish music on the side).

Dino Dos Santos / DSTYPE FOUNDRY have just released an extraordinary slab serif called Prelo Slab. Never seen a slab being so close to a perfect text font while still having a really distinctive display feel. Can’t wait to get my hands on this one!

The crazy typo nerds at Underware is coming to Trondheim september 30th. They are going to hold an workshop at NKF for students only, but I have heard that they´ll throw a party later that night. A typo party. Lets drink beer and talk about serifs. I am looking forward to it!
