Our friend Remi just finished some amazing wall decorations for Carat. Remi states on his Behance account: “I was asked to help with the redecoration and decoration at the office of Carat, a large media-agency in Oslo. The project included decorating 5 walls, one large illustrative, two typography related, and two with a mix of typo and illustrations. The brief was rooted in the phrase “Redefining media”, and my take on it.” I think Remi solved this one super nicely. Popping typography with awesome details. Lucky Carat people. More pictures:

Great showcase of the work with Katachi Typeface, designed specifically for iPad. I love how Katachi tries to make the best magazine experience for each issue, to explore the possibilities and push the boundaries for what touch interaction is. Great work by Andres Torresi and @katachimag.

Me and aussie Luke Stockdale went to university together at RMIT Mebourne. Stumbled upon his portfolio now six years later. He treasures the craft of vintage type and signage alongside with his design firm Whiskey Theatre Design Co. based in Nashville, Tennessee. Check out his work :-)

New York Types opening night

Doors opened on Dec. 15th for the ʻNew York Typesʼ exhibit at the Art Directors Club in New York City, presented by New York Writes Itself and The Village Voice. Inspired by the ʻScriptʼ at http://www.newyorkwritesitself.com, the exhibition brrought to life real words heard on the streets of New York City.

This event was inspired by New Yorkers, and brought to life by New Yorkers. Every piece of art in the show was inspired by a person, scene, or quote witnessed in NYC. Thank you to the scribes for contributing stories. Thank you to the people of New York who unknowingly catalyzed an amazing letterpress show.

Over 650 people (including those who acted as scribes and submitted the words they heard to the website) descended on the Art Directors Club for opening night where great art, live music and booze was enjoyed by all.

Get involved as a Scribe at http://www.newyorkwritesitself.com, and your everyday experiences of New York just might become part of the next New York Writes Itself experience, which could take the form of music, writing, photography, a short film or more.

There must be something about Spain and great type-driven graphics. We´ve had visit here in Trondheim from fellow spanish designers Alex Trochut, Marta Cerdà Alimbau and Dvein. Hope we see these guys around as well.  Vasava is a multidisciplinary studio based in Barcelona doing Graphics, Interactive and Motion. Their clients range from Diesel, Adobe, Schweppes and Nike. Friday 20th of May – the workshop venue, normally a place where they do plastic surgery (!!) but this day was all about type. (check out the “E” in the building fasade)

I’m tired (from last nights Karlovackos) but ready for som typeface to face with the Croatians.

HOWtoWOW goes HelloTypo™.

We handed out letter cards to the workshop participants. The plan was to get the crowd to make the letter from ready mates they found round and about. But first we had to fill their heads and hearts with typographical joy and inspiration.

The task: “Go out. Find ready mates. Build a letter. Take a photo” The crowd went out for fifteen minutes and came back with all sorts of sweet stuff. Flowers, dried up dog shit, bananas, car tires, medication, sugar, toys, rocks and loads more.

Now we’re going to make a bitmap font of the ready made letters, free for download. It will be up in a couple of weeks.

We finished up the workshop with showing some type treatment done by the HelloTypo™ club members. The image over is of the font See Ark Sheep by Stian and his compadre.

I started the day out tired, and ended the day tired. But I was a happy camper. Oh’ the joy! We enjoyed to do the workshop, it was great fun.

We (Aasmund and Ståle) where invited to do a workshop at How to Wow in Zagreb the 20th of may (tomorrow). So today at 0530 AM we started our trip from Trondheim to Zagreb.

New design profile for norwegian auditor company K+W by Creo Oslo. Focus on numbers and showing fascinating stories behind them.

My friend Cecilie Ellefsen is one of my favourite illustrators out there (and her boyfriend is a killer on 3D). She works with the skilled crew at Commando Group, and has her personal site Happy Meat. On her own site, she reasontly added a sketchbook section. I´m loving it. Her Moleskine is filled to thr rim with sweet and lovely illutrations. And of course type treatment. Be a quick brown fox and jump over to her sketchbook and have good, long look. Yes, it’s old news, but I can’t help to post some work of Wayne White. He transforms cheap mass produced oil paintings into surroundings for great 3D typography. His work has been compared to Ed Ruscha whom soon deserves a post here as well. Enjoy!

I´m an Art Director at Tibe T advertising agency. I got that job recently, and my first job here was to make a logo for the musical Rock ´n Roll Wolf for Trøndelag Teater. The musical is based on the movie Mama. The lead characters is a goat and of course the wolf. And everything goes down in the forrest. My friend and work mate Aasmund suggested that I should go for a walk in a forrest. So to make the logo, I went to the forrest and found some tree bark. So the typography was made with bark. Here is the prosess:

The letters got fatter, some colors and to be honest, a got a bit to much… So I did the vector boogie on the logo.. And I´m glad I did. POW the logo is all done:

Stumbled upon this amazing guy, from Sweden, named Thomas Broomé. I´ve never heard of him before, but damn he produces loads of lovely things. Not only typographical stuff, but sculptures and other sweet bites. His take on typography is right up my alley. Analog shit. No computers. Bookmarked for ever!

We have written about Jessica Hische and her super cool project; Daily Drop Cap some time ago here on HelloTypo™. Now she have made some sweet letterpress prints of selected letters. I stumbled over this sweet final project from newly graduated design student Patrycja Zywert. She says it best herself: This project is a typographic installation and a poster advertising the film about Norman Foster, titled‘How much does your building weigh, Mr. Foster?’. The idea is to express the aspects of Foster’s striking architecture by creating large geometric letters F, O, S, T, E and R. The installation also aims to become his architectural signature.

helloVARSKO! is history. The event was so smooth. People enjoyed the day from A to Z. VARSKO!, Kreativt Forum Trondheim and Grafill Trøndelag, helped us to unfold an amazing happening. Two great and inspiring talks from one of our favorite sweeds Robert Lindström from North Kingdom and Spanish designers Alex Trochut & Marta Cerdà.

Both the swede and the spanish couple got a small present from us. A book by Norwegian photographer Rune Johansen, and a pair of jeans from local jeans brand Johnny Love.

After the talks, the movie and the barbecue, The Last Ninja played to an exited audience. Click here to see video.

Amazing Margaret Berger played with a full band. Super sweet. People danced till they spilled their beer on each other. Lovely.

As we´ve stated earlier, we are collaborating with the design festival VARSKO! to make the sweetest  typographical event known to mankind come to life in Trondheim. The city of our heart. Now we can release the first name on our beautiful list. We´re proud to announce that we, on the 3rd of july, are screening the award winning documentary Typeface. We have blogged about the movie before, but now we give you the Norwegian premiere.  Typeface, by Justine Nagan, is a a documentary on American typography and graphic design. Read more here.

Calligraffiti is a combination of calligraphy and graffiti. It is also a sweet site filled with nice typography and images that will get both graffiti artist and calligraphic people to wet their pants. The man with the plan is Niels Shoe Meulman. He also just released the Calligraffiti book (buy it here) . I, for one, am putting that book on my wish list for christmas (Hi mom).

Jared Benson, founder of the typographic community  Typophile (who just last week celebrated it´s 10 year anniversary) tweeted that Matthew Butterick, former Font Bureau type designer (Herald Gothic, Hermes FB, etc) launches Typography For Lawyers. Butterick now has his own law office, and as a former type designer he saw that “legal typography is often poor”. That is why he made Typography for lawyers. I love it! Hope to see more sites like that. Anybody out there who has spare time on their hands, feel free to do something with these ideas: “Typography for truck drivers” or “Typography for phd students” or perhaps “Typography for plumbers”.

Anyhow. The coolest thing with Typography for lawyers, is that it´s a bunch of good reading there for anyone that want their papers to look good, or just learn about typography. In other words, you don´t need to be a lawyer to learn from this site. So typography rookies and others, read through the site, and take notes.  Bonus: If you are a twitter addict like me, follow Typography For Lawyers here, and Font Bureau here.

Everyone have heard about the earthquake that hit Haiti. A nice project that raise from this sad event is The Haiti Poster Project. I have browsed thru the site and there is some sweet bites among the poster load. One that cached my eye was this one by Alonzo Felix. Why? Because I like the simplicity of it, and of course the good vibe. This is no “pitty-me-poster”. I like.

A former student of mine Kjersti Barli aka Svingtrapp have been playing with the art of letterpress. Kjersti is currently studying visual communication at KhiO. On her blog she released some pictures of the process. I´m jealous, I also want to letterpress. So to ease my pain I´ve stolen some of the pics, and I´ll happily share them with you. After yesterdays talk, I found my self bold enough to post an old type sketch of mine. This was made for a project we had couple of years ago. Think it was early 2007. The sketch was suppose to be, if it worked out (witch it did not), the heading for the famous UREDD calendar. Anyhow, here is my sketch:

Dissociative identity disorder is a typeface with two distinct personalities.
Following in the tradition of Tyler Durden and “Jack” (Ed Norton’s character) in Fight Club,
the typeface is at once an aggressive risk taker, and a solid, trustworthy friend.

Great concept and excecution on this branding project for onedotzero by Wieden + Kennedy London. By interacting with the audience they create a fluid and changing brand for onedotzero. Check it out!

Mats Ottdal went one year above me in school at RMIT Communication Design, Melbourne. He is now working in NYC at Stag&Here. I remember his graduate folio, and I’m delighted to see more of his recent type driven work.

New release from Hoefler & Frere-Jones. Vitesse is as H&FJ say a slab serif for the 21st century. Read the story behind Vitesse, see the different styles, and take it for a test drive here.

I took Vitesse for a spin, I highly recommend it.

Our friend (and fellow type club member) Stian W. Bugten and his buddy Simon P. Egli has worked on a font the for a while now. We blogged about the project some time ago, but things have happened since then.

Typeface aka “Captain A-Face”, is a Marvel vigilante. Typeface is a army veteran, and a former sign painter, with bad mental health. Even though he has no powers, he have won over Spider Man once, and, I might ad, he has weapons: A variety of letters-based weaponry adorning his costume (including a razor-sharp letter “P”). He is my, hands down, favorite Marvel, even though he was killed in 2007. R.I.P.

I saw this sweet, sweet tee on a twitter-link. I just bought it right away. I can´t wait till summer. Woho! Anyone up for some wrestling?

FontShop is celebrating 20 years of delivering sweet, sweet digital fonts. It started with floppy disks, packed with the Spiekermann brothers font design, in 1989. Here is a really fun statistic site (yes, it is fun!) they have put together. Not only stats, but fun facts and more historical treats.

Melkeveien made a really bautiful typeface for SDG and their client Statoil. Yes, it´s for the same profile as the much talked about redesigned logo… (Statoil and SDG is presenting the new profile at faglig frokost 9. desember at DogA (Oslo) ) I like the typeface. Good work Melkeveien!
