But Carmichael, together with art director Mark Denton and Photographers Sean & Ben projected the artwork on to the back of the van so Carmichael could trace it in the dirt with his finger. #Wow ❚

Friday 20th of May – the workshop venue, normally a place where they do plastic surgery (!!) but this day was all about type. (check out the “E” in the building fasade)

I’m tired (from last nights Karlovackos) but ready for som typeface to face with the Croatians.

HOWtoWOW goes HelloTypo™.

We handed out letter cards to the workshop participants. The plan was to get the crowd to make the letter from ready mates they found round and about. But first we had to fill their heads and hearts with typographical joy and inspiration.

But after a couple of hours talking about typography, it was time to make some.

The task: “Go out. Find ready mates. Build a letter. Take a photo” The crowd went out for fifteen minutes and came back with all sorts of sweet stuff. Flowers, dried up dog shit, bananas, car tires, medication, sugar, toys, rocks and loads more.

Now we’re going to make a bitmap font of the ready made letters, free for download. It will be up in a couple of weeks.

We finished up the workshop with showing some type treatment done by the HelloTypo™ club members. The image over is of the font See Ark Sheep by Stian and his compadre.

I started the day out tired, and ended the day tired. But I was a happy camper. Oh’ the joy! We enjoyed to do the workshop, it was great fun.

We (Aasmund and Ståle) where invited to do a workshop at How to Wow in Zagreb the 20th of may (tomorrow). So today at 0530 AM we started our trip from Trondheim to Zagreb.

Google images was nice enough to introduce me to these beautiful handmade posters from Belgium. They are posters for an exhibition made by the participating artists themselves. I’m guessing it’s some kind of adhesive paper / tape in glorious neon red and green they’ve used. Gotta love it.

This video made me a litle dizzy and I never saw Conan O’Brians final episode of The Tonight Show on NBC, but the typography is still very cool.

I stumbled upon this extraordinary piece of landscape while i was fiddling around with Google Earth the other day. Wikipedia states that: “Sheikh Hamad owns Futaisi Island, this has been handed down from father to son. It covers an area of 50 square kilometres …” I think it’s more than probable that this is that exact island, just outside Abu Dhabi. According to the scale on Google maps, the letters are approximately 480 meters high and the whole word is about 1,7 kilometers long! That should make the text around 1 360 500 pt.

Sheik Hamad is a cool sheik. Maybe a tad bit crazy, but still cool.

Beatiful installation of 108 supermarket plastic bags and a fan.

While walking around in Berlin i stumbled upon this incredible wall art in the shop of Esther Perbandt (a bag designer). The street-artist-turned-straight-artist Jaybo Munk is the creator behind the display which is made all by scrap wood and measures 3m x 3m. It was made especially for the autumn/winter collection, so if you want to have a look at it you’d better hurry! And you should, because these pictures don’t do justice to the art work at all. The shop is in Mitte (Almstadtstrasße 3).

Meny, a norwegian supermarket chain, surprised me today while I read the news paper. In the news paper Meny had a standard advertisement paper (product + price). But on the front page of their paper they had some fantastic carved type. The rest of the layout wea crap, but that type was a piece of heaven. (I don´t know who did it. Do you?) Enjoy:

Stumbled upon this amazing guy, from Sweden, named Thomas Broomé. I´ve never heard of him before, but damn he produces loads of lovely things. Not only typographical stuff, but sculptures and other sweet bites. His take on typography is right up my alley. Analog shit. No computers. Bookmarked for ever!

Stumbled upon Atelier Martino&Jaña. Not only do they have lots of sweet work going on, they also have a clever site. Check them out.

One of the Cmykkel girls and her boyfriend, art dude and musician Tore Reisch, made an alphabet of pine a while back. Tore made a piece of art with it. Nice. I´ve been a Reisch fan since I first saw a painting by him, on a wall in Stallmesterveien in Trondheim back in ’99. Cool to se local people play with type!

I stumbled over this sweet final project from newly graduated design student Patrycja Zywert. She says it best herself: This project is a typographic installation and a poster advertising the film about Norman Foster, titled‘How much does your building weigh, Mr. Foster?’. The idea is to express the aspects of Foster’s striking architecture by creating large geometric letters F, O, S, T, E and R. The installation also aims to become his architectural signature.

“The results of an extensive exploration with shadows, the One Day Poem Pavilion demonstrates the poetic, transitory, site-sensitive and time-based nature of light and shadow.
Using a complex array of perforations, the pavilion’s surface allows light to pass through creating shifting patterns, which–during specific times of the year–transform into the legible text of a poem. The specific arrangements of the perforations reveal different shadow-poems according to the solar calendar: a theme of new-life during the summer solstice, a reflection on the passing of time at the period of the winter solstice. The time-based nature of the poem–and the visitor’s time-based encounters with it–allow viewers to have different experiences either seeing a stanza of the poem or getting the whole poem. All of these possible experiences are equally valuable and have meanings unique to the individual. This technique has the potential for producing particular effects and meanings within an architectural environment. Without the use of a source of power other than the sun, this project uses light and shadow to push the boundaries of communication and experiential delight.”

TypePong is a new font game for iPhone. Based on the old TV-game called Tennis. I am hooked. :-)

Jared Benson, founder of the typographic community  Typophile (who just last week celebrated it´s 10 year anniversary) tweeted that Matthew Butterick, former Font Bureau type designer (Herald Gothic, Hermes FB, etc) launches Typography For Lawyers. Butterick now has his own law office, and as a former type designer he saw that “legal typography is often poor”. That is why he made Typography for lawyers. I love it! Hope to see more sites like that. Anybody out there who has spare time on their hands, feel free to do something with these ideas: “Typography for truck drivers” or “Typography for phd students” or perhaps “Typography for plumbers”.

Anyhow. The coolest thing with Typography for lawyers, is that it´s a bunch of good reading there for anyone that want their papers to look good, or just learn about typography. In other words, you don´t need to be a lawyer to learn from this site. So typography rookies and others, read through the site, and take notes.  Bonus: If you are a twitter addict like me, follow Typography For Lawyers here, and Font Bureau here.

Funny idea from fffffound and about.

A clever gentleman from Milan named Matteo Gualandris have made a magazine called “Science Fiction Typography”. It contains an analytical story of typographic used in America’s most popular science fiction magazines published between 1930 and 1970. The main focus is on cover headlines. To make the magazine look old and used Matteo had it stuffed down in his back pocket for days.
