Friday 20th of May – the workshop venue, normally a place where they do plastic surgery (!!) but this day was all about type. (check out the “E” in the building fasade)

I’m tired (from last nights Karlovackos) but ready for som typeface to face with the Croatians.

HOWtoWOW goes HelloTypo™.

We handed out letter cards to the workshop participants. The plan was to get the crowd to make the letter from ready mates they found round and about. But first we had to fill their heads and hearts with typographical joy and inspiration.

But after a couple of hours talking about typography, it was time to make some.

The task: “Go out. Find ready mates. Build a letter. Take a photo” The crowd went out for fifteen minutes and came back with all sorts of sweet stuff. Flowers, dried up dog shit, bananas, car tires, medication, sugar, toys, rocks and loads more.

Now we’re going to make a bitmap font of the ready made letters, free for download. It will be up in a couple of weeks.

We finished up the workshop with showing some type treatment done by the HelloTypo™ club members. The image over is of the font See Ark Sheep by Stian and his compadre.

I started the day out tired, and ended the day tired. But I was a happy camper. Oh’ the joy! We enjoyed to do the workshop, it was great fun.

We (Aasmund and Ståle) where invited to do a workshop at How to Wow in Zagreb the 20th of may (tomorrow). So today at 0530 AM we started our trip from Trondheim to Zagreb.

My good friend and Tibe T colleague Aasmund Reitan Hegglid and myself where kindly invited to Zagreb to hold a typography workshop at the 20th of may. Of course we rapidly replied with the CapsLock pressed in: YES! We are going to hold the workshop for the cream of the crop of advertising agencies in Croatia, at the event How to wow. We´re really looking forward to this event. We´re plotting the event as we speak, and it will be nine whole hours in typography heaven. If you are in Zagreb, be a clever type-junkie and come join us for a day of fun.

My sister is a photography student and her friend is a design student. Both at NKF in Trondheim. They decided to play with typography the other day. The result is this picture of my sister. I love it.

I was looking through my archives today and stumbled upon this typographical piece I did in 2009. And since I found it, why not share it with you guys.

I´m an Art Director at Tibe T advertising agency. I got that job recently, and my first job here was to make a logo for the musical Rock ´n Roll Wolf for Trøndelag Teater. The musical is based on the movie Mama. The lead characters is a goat and of course the wolf. And everything goes down in the forrest. My friend and work mate Aasmund suggested that I should go for a walk in a forrest. So to make the logo, I went to the forrest and found some tree bark. So the typography was made with bark. Here is the prosess:

The letters got fatter, some colors and to be honest, a got a bit to much… So I did the vector boogie on the logo.. And I´m glad I did. POW the logo is all done:

Played with chalk with my daughter and her friends yesterday. They wrote their names. I wrote:

One of the Cmykkel girls and her boyfriend, art dude and musician Tore Reisch, made an alphabet of pine a while back. Tore made a piece of art with it. Nice. I´ve been a Reisch fan since I first saw a painting by him, on a wall in Stallmesterveien in Trondheim back in ’99. Cool to se local people play with type!

helloVARSKO! is history. The event was so smooth. People enjoyed the day from A to Z. VARSKO!, Kreativt Forum Trondheim and Grafill Trøndelag, helped us to unfold an amazing happening. Two great and inspiring talks from one of our favorite sweeds Robert Lindström from North Kingdom and Spanish designers Alex Trochut & Marta Cerdà.

Alex on how he made the font Neo Deco. Marta and Alex actually did they first ever talk together as a team at helloVARSKO! We recommend their talk to anyone, everywhere. People came up to us and said they was so inspired they had to run home to draw asap.

Both the swede and the spanish couple got a small present from us. A book by Norwegian photographer Rune Johansen, and a pair of jeans from local jeans brand Johnny Love.

helloVARSKO! gets better for each day. Yay!

We already look forward to July 3rd, no doubt about that, but now we are so pleased with our plans for the day that we want to fast forward and have fun now! Not only are we screening Typeface, and getting a visit from one of the very best designers in Europe. No, no. That is not enough for us. We want you people to dance. So we have booked three marvelous artists whom will finish up our fantastic day.

MARGARET BERGER is also coming to sprinkle sweetness over us at Byscenen on July 3rd. We so are looking forward to seeing Margaret do her thing and taking helloVARSKO! to the next level. (Bonus info: helloVARSKO! is all about typography and designer Joakim Jansson custom typography for each page in the booklet of Margaret Bergers album, Pretty Scary Silver Fairy. This we like.) last but not least mr NILS BECH is joining the party and brings his friend BENDIK GISKE. So helloVARSKO! is going contemporary up in this. NILS says it best on his MySpace: “Nils Bech is a classically trained singer with a focus on performative aspects. An integral part of the Norwegian art, fashion, and music scene, he has taken part in exhibitions of contemporary art in New York, Miami, Milan, Zürich, Basel, Berlin,Cologne, London, Vienna and Oslo, as well as performances at the Norwegian Opera House and the National Theater.” And now he is making us look good. Oh, yes. You better believe it. It is true. HelloTypo™ and friends delivers again. We have been so lucky that the Spanish wonder, mr Alex Trochut, have decided to pay us a visit. 3rd of july he and his talented girlfriend (and coworker) Marta Cerdà Alimbau are taking the podium and going to do a show&tell. We are so pleased that Alex and Marta is taking the trip up to the capitol of mustaches, Trondheim, to do a talk and drink Dahls with us. So in addition to the Typeface screening we now give you two sweet lecture holders. Lucky you!

After yesterdays talk, I found my self bold enough to post an old type sketch of mine. This was made for a project we had couple of years ago. Think it was early 2007. The sketch was suppose to be, if it worked out (witch it did not), the heading for the famous UREDD calendar. Anyhow, here is my sketch:

Me and fellow type club member, Aasmund, played with pencils and paper yesterday. I took (crappy iPhone-) pictures of it, and loudly said that I would post them here. So here goes.

I know the pics sucks, and it´s not the greatest font design in the world, but f**k it, it was fun.

This was fun. Today I was at the NKF (Norges Kreative fagskole) and talked about type design and typography. Very nice bunch to talk to. Lots of questions afterwards as well. So either they were interested or I was a bit blury and unclear. Hope to come back soon. I’m sorry that I didnt took pictures of the wonderful gang. Instead a have a picture of the wine Eva gave to me :-)

My friend and artist Bjørn Kowalski Hansen (one of the co-founders of the legendary t-shirt brand and art project Håkki™ (check out the super cheesy and fun intro on this site) ) has some sweet art projects going on. Since Trond Aslak posted this post today, I thought that I could post som pictures from when Sami was in Trondheim in the name of type. He held a workshop and a lecture. Then we took him out for a beer.

Our friend (and fellow type club member) Stian W. Bugten and his buddy Simon P. Egli has worked on a font the for a while now. We blogged about the project some time ago, but things have happened since then.

I was making some cookies earlier this afternoon. I got fed up with christmas shapes, so I made some HelloTypo cookies.

Sorry for the bad kerning, the plate was hot as hell.

I was doing a job for a client today. And in the breaks I painted on the wall with a Krink. All work no play makes Hello Typo boring. :)

Back in the good old days I had a t-shirt brand named :pøbel (:pøbel means bully, hooligan, rascal etc). And just now, when I was researching type on the intergalactic internet, I stumbled upon this book; Body Type.

The book made me remember that I actually got people to tattoo my brand name and/or logo… Super fun. I thought I should share it with you, so her goes:

Three people got a :pøbel-tattoo before I stopped paying for the tattoos… This is over three years ago, but still I get people comming up to me at parties and such asking me for a tattoo…

BTW: I don´t buy people tattoos anymore…

When I came to the office to day this letter was waiting for me. House Industries had sent me a NEUTRAFACE SLAB poster.. They did that, because they hoped that I would buy the typeface… I really want to buy it… so it just might be that I´ll do just that. Thanks House for the poster & reminder.
